The story behind the ink..

kevin's tattooFacebook has been a daily part of my life for quite some time now. I recently got back in contact with my brother's daughter, Randi, who asked me what my tattoo means. It was then that I realized that I hadn't really shared the full story with very many people so I took a few minutes and explained it to her. My reply went something like this:

"When my daughter Kathryn was about 6 years old she was playing with some nail polish. She ended up making a picture on a sheet of paper that has had a great impact on my life. In multicolour splendor the picture was of the words 'I Love You".

That night she placed the picture on my pillow as she was getting ready for bed. When I went to bed I saw it lying there and was filled with happiness. I brought the picture into my daughters room and while she slept, placed it under the edge of her pillow and gave her a hug & kiss goodnight.

Not long after that another picture was drawn on the back of the paper, using the same colourful nail polish, which says "I Love You Too". Each night for many, many years the same piece of paper, now shielded in a document protector, has made its way back and forth between us.

So, to answer your question, my tattoo says "I Love You" and it represents the special bond that is shared between Kathryn and I. BTW, she got a tattoo on her back that says "I Love You too" in the same writing that is paired with a beautiful butterfly!"

Whitby pub foils Grinch

the grinchNeither sleet, nor snow, nor any mean Grinch was going to steal Christmas from children in Whitby this holiday season.

Staff and patrons of Hunter's Horn Pub were so determined to deliver cheer after a miserly theft, they tripled their donations and braved a snowstorm to hold a planned Yule party for 29 disadvantaged youngsters yesterday. (more)

Extended Holiday - Thanks Doc!

mr toothSeveral months ago a process was put into motion that has resulted in my Christmas Holidays being quite a bit longer than I had expected them to be.. 25 days long to be exact! A molar was extracted leaving an empty space where the tooth had once been. A few days ago I was in the hospital to have some surgery to remedy the problem. "Surgery?" one might ask.. Yes, I have decided that I didn't want a gaping hole where the tooth once was and that, at 40 years old, I was too young for dentures or a bridge so the decision was made to get a dental implant. It sounds easy enough, right? What could be hard about a dental implant?

As it turns out the bone in the upper part of the jaw is quite thin and needs to be 'beefed up' before an implant can be safely set into it. That was why I was at the hospital for surgery on the 12th. Bone was harvested from my left knee so that two bone grafts could be preformed. One, a sinus lift, on the top of the jawbone and the second on the lower part of the jawbone where the tooth had been extracted.

The staff at the hospital in Truro were great. They made me feel very comfortable and took the time to make sure I understood everything that was about to happen. Some sloppy weather slowed down the doctor a bit.. but less than an hour behind schedule the whole process was underway. The recovery room was lots of fun as I faded in and out of consciousness and everything around me seemed to go on with very little notice. A few hours later I was getting dressed, a big bag of medication in hand, and was sent on my merry way. With the help of Dave, a friend and co-worker, I arrived home a few hours later.

Here I sit, typing on my laptop keyboard barely feeling any pain at all (thanks to the hycodan). I don't need to track the passing time on the clock at all. I know when the pain medication is wearing off and it's time to start the medicated cycle of holiday joy and bliss over again. ;-)

Wine & Dine..

We now have a new table and set of chairs to sit at in our dining room. The plan is to dine together as a family more and to stop using the dining room table as a big storage shelf!
